A study revealed in the Journal of American Society of Nephrology, shows that control of blood pressure (BP) could reduce the risk of early death amongst CKD patients.
The study showed that having a lower BP target than 140/90 mm Hg that is currently the recommended goal, was safe and associated with protection against premature death.
Assistant Professor at the University of California San Francisco, Elaine Ku stated ‘the data that we provide includes outcomes beyond the typical duration of clinical trials of blood pressure control and demonstrate the long-term safety of tighter blood pressure control, with potential benefits from a mortality standpoint in patients with known kidney disease.’
Longer-term observational studies however, show that lower blood pressure levels may be harmful.
